Enjoying life’s small miracles!

I was sitting in a restaurant eating breakfast when I heard it...the unrestrained laughter of a small child! A beautiful family was sitting in the corner, enjoying time together. I don’t know what the father said to his three-year-old son, but the little boy was exploding with giggles, snorts, and squeals of laughter. The little man’s joy was so infectious that his Mom, Dad, the waiter, the customers around him, and myself quickly joined in on the spontaneous joy party that was happening. The laughter was pure, inspiring, and holy.

I had just witnessed a “small miracle” and what a miracle it was! The joy of Heaven had touched my heart, and I was filled to overflowing. The amazing thing about joy is that you can share it and not lose anything! In fact, when you share joy, you receive more back in return!!!

This moment embodies the scripture:

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” (Proverbs 17:22, NIV)

As the little boy continued to pour “good medicine” into the world, my weariness lifted, and my heart was changed. I was so thankful to witness the miracle of a child’s laughter.

I often think that we miss out on life's “small miracles”. We have been so conditioned to see the grand, the large, and the impressive in our lives that we miss out on the small and simple miracles that surround us every day. I wonder how our days would change if we paid attention to the Small Miracles that only Jesus can reveal to us?

Take a moment and think back over yesterday. Were there any small miracles that you can recall? Write them down and take a moment to savor them. Thank God for them.

If none come to mind, pray this prayer with me: Jesus, slow me down. Show me the miraculous in every moment. Help me to see ALL that you are doing around me. Give me eyes to witness the small miracles and to give you thanks for those precious gifts. May I not be so focused on MY work, that I forget to pay attention to YOUR gifts. Thank you for this opportunity. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
