The War on Wisdom

DAY 33 OF 35

To prevent and handle the potential “terrible two” phase, I carefully studied a parenting book called: “To Train Up a Child”. Before that time, I used to page through parenting books and used them for light reading. In my search for the golden nuggets of parenting 101, I came upon Michael Pearl’s discussion of this verse. He told a story of when he trained his dog to do some tricks. He gave the details of how long it took and how much effort he had to put in. In the end, success!!

He also said that sometimes as parents we expect our little ones to do the tricks without the training. We expect our children to know the ropes and show acceptable behavior just by giving them simple instructions.

When you train for an ultra-marathon like the Comrades, you are expected to do at least 460 hours on the road, that's 460 hours of training for nine hours of running. How much training do you suppose we need for 90 years of living? We are instructed to train up a child when they are young because then they are susceptible to everything. If we put prayer and effort into leading them in the right path when they are young, they will still follow that path when they are old. This verse promises it.
