DAY 3 OF 4

What do we need freedom from? Well, we need freedom from a lot of stuff.

The dictionary defines freedom as “the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved”. Before Jesus, we were definitely enslaved by our sin. There was no way out, no way to wipe our slate clean. Our sins followed wherever we went.

What is sin? Basically, it’s anything that we do that is bad, wrong, and goes against God and His ways.

A lot of the big stuff is covered in The Ten Commandments: do not worship any other Gods, do not lie, do not steal, do not murder. But really, sin is anything that we do that would be offensive to God and separate us from Him. It can be big, it can be small, but ALL of us have sinned in some way shape or form and thus we NEED Jesus.

You know that icky feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you tell a lie, or laugh at a mean joke about someone else, or when you are tempted to look off of your neighbors’ answers during a test? That’s the Holy Spirit trying to get your attention and to keep you from sinning. Sometimes we recognize it, but sometimes we don’t. For the times we don’t, we need Jesus’ help.

The little things can open the door to bigger and bigger sin throughout days, weeks, months and years. Because of that, one little lie can turn into a web so big and deep and overwhelming that it brings with it a physical sense of heaviness. These are the chains, shackles, and the bondage that sin carries with it. The enemy wants us to give up, to accept that we will always feel this way, to never find relief from our shame and grief.

But Jesus? He’s the opposite! He wants us to acknowledge the sin we need freedom from, change our ways to move away from the sin, cry out to Him, and get back on track! There is never a sin too big, a chain too heavy or a bondage too great for God. He is bigger than it all and He wants to offer you relief and peace through accepting Jesus.
