Freedom From Addiction

DAY 13 OF 14

My life in early recovery from thirteen years of addiction changed when God revealed to me that prayer is not about begging God to do something for me; rather, prayer is an ongoing conversation between a loving Father and me.

I learned quickly that complaining and begging were not an effective form of prayer.

Effective prayer is when we pray as a son or daughter who knows their Heavenly Father hears them, loves them, accepts them, and wants to answer their prayers. God wants to bring about His promises in our lives even more than we want Him to bring them about.

Here is a biblical key to seeing answered prayers. “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” (Philippians 4:6) As challenges present themselves, we get to lean on God for strength, submit our requests to Him. and partner with Him to see His promises manifest in our lives.

Thanking Him for what He has done already is the best place to start when submitting new requests to Him. This simple and Godly approach helps us live in gratitude as we wait for God to show Himself faithful in our lives.

We may not get to pick when or how our prayers will be answered, but God does promise to answer our prayers as we keep them by His nature and promises. (Mark 11:24)

Prayer Tip

Ask the Holy Spirit to revitalize your prayer life. Pray to God to show you how to pray more effectively. Pray to learn to know His loving and Fatherly voice. And keep in mind that the more general we are in our prayers, the more general our answers will be, but the more specific we are in prayer, the more specific our answers will be.

Action Step

Sit down and write out the two biggest challenges you are now facing. Then go to the Bible, and find one of God’s promises that provides a solution to each of your challenges. Write these promises down. Begin to partner with God in prayer to see these outcomes and promises manifest in your life.
