Psalms Streak: A Daily Devotional in the PsalmsSample
Set a Guard
Have you ever said something you wish you hadn't? We're just going to go ahead and assume that is a resounding YES! We have all spoken thoughtlessly or in anger or ignorance. Maybe you were just trying to be funny and you ended up offending someone. Maybe you told a secret you were meant to keep. Maybe you got mad and told someone how you felt when you probably should have just cooled off first. In David's wisdom, he says a prayer over his mouth to prevent future mistakes.
Let's look at verse 3 again: "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips to keep me from speaking thoughtlessly.”
First things first, if you have already spoken words you regret, think about whether or not you need to ask someone for forgiveness. Make things right with a person and with God. Second, commit to praying David's prayer over yourself regularly, especially if this is an area where you struggle! Third, tell someone about your commitment and ask him or her to keep you accountable. As a follower of Jesus, focus on making your words match your heart.
GO DEEP: Do you need to ask someone for forgiveness today? Spend time right now praying David's prayer over your words.
BE BOLD: Who needs to hear this? Who could you share it with?
