The Justice Journey

DAY 4 OF 6

4. Humble Step

If you are a part of the dominant white culture, chances are you are becoming aware of racial injustice in a way you have never known before. Countless individuals say, "I just didn't know." There is growing clarity to the challenges many black and brown communities face consistently.

Suppose the dominant culture will be a part of the long-term solution to these challenges. In that case, it requires a posture of humility. It will need the loudest and most influential voices to take a stance to listen and learn. It will require organizations with abundant resources to understand how to serve the black community, not lead the change. But, a posture of humility is the only way things will change.

Jesus shows us the most powerful posture we have is one of humility. He gives us a picture when he gets down to wash his followers' feet. They were shocked to see the one they followed taking the lowest position to serve them. He invited them to do the same to leverage the influence he would give them. Jesus shows us the lower we get, the more influence we have.

A movement towards justice will require leaders who are willing to follow. The ability to leverage influence is a leader's greatest strength. Leaders who leverage their influence to promote others are leaders who will lead our world to racial and social justice. It takes a significant amount of humility to use your influence to elevate the influence of others, to build platforms for others to stand on. Leaders don't need to leave current positions, but they need to leverage them for the greater good. What can you leverage to fight for racial justice?

Justice isn't an option as people of faith; it's the reason we exist! So, may we leverage our influence to see lasting change.

Prayer: Jesus, give me the posture of humility to understand and serve. I want to grow in my understanding and give what I have to those in need.
