The Justice Journey

DAY 2 OF 6

2. Intentional Step

Change doesn't happen by accident; it happens on purpose. We must be intentional to join Jesus in bringing change to the world. Segregation has permeated our culture for so long because it's built on our desire for comfort and convenience. Injustice perpetuated by the masses is typically a result of unintentional decisions based on preferred outcomes.

Most people aren't intentionally prejudiced, but they do have preferences. Those preferences lead to separation and segregation if we are unaware of our preferences. Our preferences cause us to live with prejudice in the world. For example, suppose you are middle class, raising a family. In that case, you would be drawn to a suburban community where your church, school, wellness, and social needs are met in close proximity. These are not bad things, but if we are not aware of our decisions, we will unintentionally make decisions that lead to more separation.

When Jesus went through Samaria and met the women at the well, the scriptures say he "had" to go through Samaria. Scholars will tell you he didn't 'have' to go through Samaria because most Jews on his journey would not go through Samaritan. But, Jesus had to go because he had to give us a picture of what we are called to do. So instead of going 'around,' he had to go 'through.'

The good Samaritan story also gives us a picture of our calling to go to people who are hurting and different from us. We choose to go towards those who are different or around them. It's always easier and more convenient to walk around, but Jesus shows us a different journey.

The journey towards justice happens when we are intentional about understanding our lifestyle and making decisions to engage in justice initiatives. No doubt, it will cost you time and resources, but it's the way of Jesus and his plan for his followers.

How can you intentionally take a step towards the journey of justice?

Prayer: Jesus, I want to take intentional steps towards justice. Give me faith to walk towards the broken and those in need?
