Becoming Like Jesus: Silence and SolitudeSample
Three-And-One
This week, we are going to look at the three-and-one nature of our God. This is known as the Trinity (tri-unity). It’s the belief that the God of the Bible is one being made up of three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit. Understanding this about God has profound implications on our faith. How so? For starters, it shows us that the very nature of God is defined by the loving relationship of the Trinity. And that relationship of love is something that we have all been invited into. This is why we can say with confidence that love isn’t just something God does, but love is who God is.
Pray…
God, I want to know you more intimately. Help me to grasp the wonder and mystery of the Trinity. Surround me with the love of the Father. Show me the grace of the Son. Fill me with the power of the Spirit. In Jesus name, amen.
Read…
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” - Matthew 28:18-20 NIV
Consider…
The God of the Bible is one being and three persons. An eternal union of love between Father, Son, and Spirit. God created the world and everything in it because He wanted to share that love with us. We have been invited to know and be known by the three-and-one community of love we call God.
How does the concept of the Trinity change the way you think about God? What questions do you have about the Trinity? What intrigues you? What confuses you? Where will you look to seek out answers to those questions?
Listen…
Find a comfortable place where you won’t be distracted. Maybe a cozy chair, a closet, or even sitting outside on a porch.
Set a timer for 5-10 minutes.
Settle into God’s presence by taking a few deep breaths and praying this prayer.
As you breathe in, “Lord Jesus…” When you breathe out, “Have mercy on me.”
Breathe in, “Heavenly Father…” Breathe out, “You’re all that I need.”
In, “Holy Spirit…” and out, “Breathe on me.”
Repeat this prayer until your mind is clear and your body is still. When you’re ready, ask God to speak to you.
When you get distracted, repeat the prayer above to help you bring your attention back to God.
When the timer ends, thank God for the time you spent together and head into the rest of your day with a clearer sense of His presence.
