Handling Corporate CareersSample
When you work for a big multinational company (MNC) with thousands of employees across the globe, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd! And we oftentimes get discouraged and wonder if anything we do will make a difference for our company! We as Christians are called to be “in the world, but not of the world.” In other words, we are called to “blend in, but stand out”! Like a lotus that thrives even in muddy water, we are called to be different at work!
So how can we “blend in, but stand out”? How can we be different? By going against counter-corporate culture! When the corporate world says it's ok to be in a ‘rat race,’ we go against that and ‘compete only with ourselves.' When the corporate world says it's ok to play office politics, we go against that and help our colleagues perform better. We help carry their burdens (Gal 6:2). We help them in their projects and walk an extra mile (Matt 5:41). You see, when we go an extra mile and help our colleagues in their time of need, they will know we are Christians by the love we show them (John 13:35).
When we show kindness to the security guard in office, the cleaning staff, be generous with our colleagues, they will know that we truly care for them and we “stand out” in the process! You see, your colleagues “don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care”! We are called to leave a legacy of generosity (Matt 5:42 and Prov 3:27) in our corporate offices - generosity with our words, our smile, our finances, our work, our time and in our actions. When my colleague’s family passed away in a tragic fire accident a few years ago, I immediately dropped all office work and went to be with him, helping him in multiple ways, big and small.
I was technically his boss. But at that moment of his pain, my job was only to serve him. So I removed my suit/tie and took the lead to serve. Seeing me, my colleagues did the same. This started a “love revolution” that changed the dynamics of the whole team in my office! We weren’t colleagues anymore thereafter, we were family!
I am convinced that the only “evangelism” that we are allowed to do/preach in most secular corporate workplaces today (due to corporate HR policy restrictions) is the evangelism of “showing God’s love in action”! That act of showing God’s love will make your colleagues love you, respect you, and, more importantly, the name of Jesus will be lifted higher in your office causing your company to soar!
So make a decision to show Christ’s love to someone at your workplace today while excelling in your work! That will truly make you “blend in, but stand out”!
