I hate to tell you bad news – but as a believer, you cannot manipulate your promotion to the next level in your corporate job! No amount of “smart work” or “apple polishing” or “one-upmanship” in your office can get you promoted to the next level. The Good News for a believer is that our promotion does not come from the east or the west or the desert, it comes only from our Heavenly Father (Psalms 75:6)!

He exalts one and puts down the other! All we need to do is stay focused on pleasing Him in our places of work! I have received 6 promotions in 11 years in spite of me facing tough opposition from competitive colleagues, tough bosses and hostile clients. You see, we ought to serve our earthly bosses and work hard “as unto the Lord and not unto men” (Col 3:23). So when we recognize God as our boss, then all things that bother us in our places of work will seem ridiculously dim and disappear! He will exalt us. So the first secret to climbing the corporate ladder is to recognize that our Good God is our Boss! 

The second secret to climbing the corporate ladder is this - the Bible says, Humble yourselves and in due time, He will lift you up (1 Pet 5:6)! Higher and Higher as the worship song goes! The more you humble yourselves both before God and man, the more you will be lifted higher! But you say, sure, I can humble myself before God, but how can I humble myself before my boss or co-worker who taunts me, who does not care about me?

You see, we ought to consider others better than we are (Phil 2:3)! Our job is to put others first and not worry about “our seat at the table.” When we have this attitude, in due time, God will cause our corporate colleagues to start to “follow us,” (even if they don’t officially report to us) because they soon start to see that we have their best interest in mind. We will become “leaders” even without the “official designation.” And soon, before you know it, the “upward designation hike” will follow! 

So be encouraged today - keep doing the best you can, in sincere humility to all the people you can, knowing that God is the only source of your promotion, and in due season, you will be promoted (and often “double promoted”) beyond your wildest dreams!
