The Bible Is Alive

You’ve got a big science test coming up, and you’ll need to know things like how many moons are in our solar system, what species of fish live at the bottom of the ocean, the names of the gases that make up our atmosphere, etc. There are two textbooks you can choose from to help you study for this test; one was written this year, and one was written 700 years ago.

You’d pick the more recent textbook, right? That older textbook won’t be able to help you very much because we’ve learned so many new things about our world since it was written.

Sometimes it’s easy to look at something that’s old and think it’s not very useful, but that’s definitely not true with the Bible! That older science textbook from 700 years ago is frozen in time at the date it was finished — it can’t speak to much of the world today. The Bible, however, is ALIVE. God made it so that it would always be able to speak to us, no matter what year it is, how old we are, or what situation we’re facing.

Just look at 2 Timothy 3:16:

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”

See that? Because God breathed the Bible into existence, it’s alive — and there will always be helpful things we can learn from it. And some things written at the end of the Bible haven’t even happened yet! That means the story isn’t finished, and we get to join in and be part of it.

Ask yourself: What are some things you’ve learned from the Bible? How does knowing those things help you?

Challenge yourself: Find something in the Bible that’s useful for showing you how to live.

Pray: God, thank You for breathing life into the Bible so it will always be helpful to us. Show us what we can do to build our lives on it and become part of the story. In Jesus’ name, amen.
