The Bible Is Essential

Do you like salt?

If you like french fries, pizza, or pretzels, then your answer is probably yes! Salt gives a lot of tasty foods their flavor. But there’s something even more important about salt — your body needs it. Salt contains sodium, which your body uses to control things like your muscles, nerves, and even blood pressure. The right amount of salt is essential for keeping our bodies healthy.

Like salt is essential for our bodies, the Bible is essential for our spiritual lives. It’s not some boring book of rules about what we can’t do — it helps us know God better by telling stories about real people and showing us how God wants to live. It even helps us understand WHY God wants His people to live a certain way; it’s because He loves us and wants our lives to be the best they can be!

This is why Jesus said this in Matthew 7:24: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Jesus taught people about God and what it looked like to live for Him, and He’s saying that by listening to His wisdom and following it, it’s like building your house on solid rock instead of sand.

The Bible is exactly what we need so we can build our lives on solid rock — that’s why the Bible is still useful, even 3,000 years after it was written!

Challenge yourself: Read your Bible each day this week — find something you have a question about, and ask someone!

Pray: God, thank You for giving us the Bible so we can know You better. Help us always remember we can find the truth about Your love and Your promises when we read it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
