Through the Bible: Song of SongsSample
We are Christ’s Bride
Let him lead me to the banquet hall, and let his banner over me be love. My beloved is mine and I am his.
Song of Songs 2:4, 16 (ESV)
"He calls me to His banqueting table and his banner over me is love." Those are the lyrics of a song I used to sing many years ago. It portrays the banquet Christ the groom is preparing for His bride the church and each one of us is a part of it. What is essential is that we the bride be prepared for it even as we wait to see the banquet unfold.
Love seals the relationship between the bride and the groom. We see the beautiful image of the oneness and equality between them – "I am his and He is mine.'" In many marriages, the husband reduces the significance of his wife or the wife refuses to acknowledge the husband's leadership, forgetting this oneness and equality. This inequality causes many challenges and friction, leading to abuse and brokenness in marriages. May we seal our marriages in love just as Christ loved us.
Prayer
Father help us to love our spouse, remembering that we are one and equal in You. Help us to love them as You loved the church. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
About this Plan
The Song of Solomon is regarded as the greatest of all poetic songs that portray the affection between a man and a woman, from courtship to marriage. The author depicts the physical pleasure God blesses a couple for their enjoyment as they come to union in marriage. This union is foreshadowing but nowhere near in comparison to, the perfect union between Christ and His people in His second coming.
