Mark: Living the Way of Jesus in the WorldSample
First Thought
Six days after his confession at Caesarea Philippi, Peter finds Himself up a high mountain with Jesus, James, and John. Jesus is transfigured, radiant with the glory of God, and in conversation with Moses and Elijah. Ethereal and terrifying, it was so tangible that Peter felt compelled to offer to build three shelters for them. As Mark notes, he was petrified and didn’t know how else to respond. At the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, when He was baptized, Jesus alone heard the assuring voice of His Father. Here, all who were present heard the Father’s affirmation, ‘This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to Him.’ The disciples have glimpsed the glory of God in Jesus in this mountaintop moment. Later, they will see His glory in the dark valley of the cross. Undoubtedly, they drew strength from this sign from heaven given to them, Jesus’ beloved followers.
What Does the Bible Say?
Why might the transfiguration have been important for these disciples at this stage in their journey with Jesus?
Living it Out
Is there a ‘mountain-top experience’ you’ve had with Jesus that has impacted your discipleship? How?
Responding in Prayer
Glorious God, thank you for the wonder of who you are. Strengthen and empower me for life with you, whether on the mountain-top or in the valley (…). Amen.
