Mark: Living the Way of Jesus in the WorldSample
First Thought
Jesus and the disciples were in Capernaum. They’re on the way to Jerusalem and Jesus is using the journey to teach His disciples what it means to follow Him. As ever, they have much to learn. Nevertheless, they are particularly embarrassing in this episode. They’d been arguing about status - who was the greatest amongst them. It sounds rather childish. Perhaps Jesus thought so, too, as He drew a little child into their midst to illustrate the posture of one who is truly great. A great person honors those at the bottom of society’s ladder, He rebukes them. In Jesus’ time, children had no status, rights, or voice. Infanticide, especially of girls, was practiced. Great people, Jesus teaches, are those who notice those who have no power or presence, who value all human beings, irrespective of status, and who will prefer others above themselves as they go about their life and work.
What Does the Bible Say?
If Jesus was teaching about service and status in your context, who or what would He use to illustrate His point?
Living it Out
Imagine yourself in conversation with Jesus. What might He commend you for as His servant in the world? Is there a self-serving attitude He might be drawing your attention to?
Responding in Prayer
Humble God, I long to be like Jesus and live in a way that demonstrates the upside-down kingdom of God. Help me see the opportunities you give me to challenge the norms about status in my context (…). Amen.
