Day 3: THE MIRROR
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. –Proverbs 3:5 (NIV)
Reflections are deceptive. We depend on them to reveal what we can’t see on our own, but what we see in the mirror is actually the opposite of what’s really there—an image in reverse—a reflection of light bouncing off a smooth surface, creating the illusion of reality. It’s a reminder that life isn’t always as it seems. My perspective—no matter how convinced I am of its validity—could actually be just that, a perspective. And the longer I walk with the Lord, the more I am reminded that God is extremely intentional about challenging and readjusting my perspective.
In today’s song, “The Mirror,” as the beautiful instrumentation reaches its center point, the music begins to play in reverse, producing an entirely new and unexpected sound. At first, the change in direction sounds a bit strange but then settles into a beautiful sound. How can the opposite of beautiful still be beautiful? So often in this life, we rely on our own understanding and instincts to make sense of the world. But Jesus taught truths that turned our thinking upside down. Love your enemies (Matthew 5:44). You have to die to live (Matthew 10:39). If you want to receive, you have to be a giver (Luke 6:38). The least are the greatest (Matthew 23:11). He had a gentle way of saying, “Don’t always trust what you think or feel. Look deeper. There’s more.”
When we feel weak and overcome by the trials of life, He sees an opportunity to draw us close and give us strength. When we think He couldn’t possibly love us, He says that nothing could separate us from His love. When we feel like we are far from Him, He calls us sons and daughters.
What is the Holy Spirit saying to you?
As you listen to this song today, let it remind you that God sees things differently than we do. God has a plan for your good today, and it may be different from what you expect. Lean into Him. Don’t always trust what you think or feel. Look deeper. There’s more.
