DAY 1 OF 7

Day 1: A PROMISE REVEALED

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. –Genesis 1:2 (NIV)

Desolate. Empty. Vast.

In Genesis Chapter 1, it says that the earth was formless and empty. Then suddenly a voice spoke, and light came bursting forth. God, the Creator of the Universe, spoke the world into existence. In one breath, nothing became something, barren became lush, and deserted became abundant. I can only imagine the symphony of color and sound that must have exploded in that moment.

“A Promise Revealed” represents that kind of beginning. It’s a soundscape of the creation of the world, God’s promise of life. But it also represents something more personal—your beginning with Christ—when that same voice spoke to the formless emptiness of your heart and flooded it with life.

Whether that moment with Him happened 30 years ago or yesterday, it undoubtedly held promises of new and exciting things: transformation, change, breakthrough. This song encapsulates not a single moment in time, but the first step of a journey. Because the promise is only the beginning. And sometimes the promise we hear takes so long to come to pass, we think it never will.

Abram sympathizes with this kind of waiting in Genesis 15. The Lord makes him a promise: One day you will have a son who will inherit all you have been blessed with in your life, and your descendants will be as numerous as the stars in the sky.

Though Abram and his wife, Sarai, are past typical child-bearing years, they initially believe the word God has spoken. But as time takes its toll and the promise lays unfulfilled, their doubts begin to form into a plan to take matters into their own hands. Instead of waiting for God’s design, they conceive a child outside of their marriage. This was a counterfeit of God’s plan and intention. So He reminds Abram of His promise once again: “You are to have a child with Sarai and your descendants will be a mighty nation.” This time, Abram chooses to fully believe and obey. His name was changed, the promise was fulfilled, and God’s plan to redeem mankind was set in motion. God’s promise was never delayed, though it seemed to be, and He was faithful to complete the work He had begun.

What is the Holy Spirit saying to you?

While you listen to this song today, think of what has God promised you. Will you believe Him for it, even in the midst of the waiting?
