What Dad Needs

DAY 4 OF 5

Refreshment For Their Weariness

After a long day of school, or a long day of work, there is always something we look forward to that gets us through. Whether it is a nice long bubble bath, our favorite television show, or a word from a friend, these things keep us motivated to push on and refresh us when we are weary. Often, encouragement comes from our fathers through a hug or some word of affirmation. However, what happens when they are the ones needing the encouragement? One of the greatest ways wives, children, and friends can support the fathers in our lives is by providing this refreshment.

When I asked two fathers in my church in which ways they felt most refreshed by their families, one father’s answer was unexpectedly simple: being told they are doing a good job. There are many things that go into fathering, and it is never easy, but sometimes all that is needed is a pat on the back and the words, “You are doing great”. Fathers have to be the rock of their household, but they are rarely affirmed or told that their hard work is noticed and appreciated. The other dad’s answer as to what refreshes him in times of weariness was quality time with his wife and family. Fathers are constantly mentoring and leading their families. Sometimes they long to step away from those roles and just simply enjoy the company of their loved ones in a fun way.

There is a story about one father who gave his son a box for Christmas that held a note stating, “I will give you one hour every single day after dinner this year to do whatever you want together”. This ended up being the best gift either of them had ever received. Refreshing our fathers can be as simple as telling them that they are doing a good job—being intentional about spending time with them. Let us reflect on how often we are verbally encouraging our dads and initiating quality time with them. How can you be more consistent in doing so?

Prayer: Father, thank You for opening our eyes to see that when we refresh others, we are refreshed. Help us to be intentional about spending time with You through Your Word. Help us to be intentional about spending time with our earthly fathers. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

About this Plan

What Dad Needs

Fathers are people who constantly sacrifice for their families with very little recognition. There are many ways to give back to these men in our lives, but it is sometimes difficult to know what they are and how to implement them everyday. As you dive into Biblical ways to recognize and strengthen your relationship with your earthly dad, you will also see the many ways they reflect our Heavenly Father.
