Martha, like any other host, wanted to create a welcoming environment because she understood who her guest was. She knew Jesus was a VIP and she was doing everything to give Him the best. 

Mary, on the other hand, wanted something different; she loved Jesus. She sat at His feet just to be around Him. 

We can all be driven by concerns and cares but Jesus makes it clear that one thing is most important - to love God and want to be around Him. He would not deny us the privilege of being around Him. He'll defend it. Serving God is a beautiful thing, but our service should not also take us away from Him. Like a lover, He yearns for you. 

We may get lost in chasing after everything that Jesus offers and neglect to be around Jesus Himself. If we choose Jesus everything else will follow. He wants us to be around Him like a child, when we do so we indirectly relinquish our desires to be in control and give Him the room to take care of our needs. He wants us, we must make up our minds that it's Him who comes first.
