Walking With Jesus Sample
The Prophecy of Peter’s Denial
Today we begin to walk with Jesus through Peter's denial. As humans we have a tendency to over promise and under deliver. Or maybe we don’t under deliver, but we fill our lives with tasks and suddenly the promises we’ve made originally out of passion and devotion, soon become burdens that we carry.
Whether it’s over committing with your schedule, or not being honest with yourself about your abilities, we often can become consumed with the promises we’ve made to others because in reality, we have no business making or keeping some of those promises. I believe it's very important for us to be careful what we promise we will do.
In Peter’s case, as he often did, he over promised his devotion to Jesus in Matthew 26:33 when he said, “Even if all fall away on account of you [Jesus], I never will.” It wasn’t just one verse later we read Jesus’ response to Peter by saying, “Truly I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times,”
(Matt 26:34). After this, in verse 35 Peter responds by saying, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And what does it say next? “And all the other disciples said the same.”
We will see very clearly over the next couple days that Peter over promised and clearly under delivered.
Read: Matthew 26:31-35
Pray: Lord, help me to simply let my yes be yes, and my no be no as it says in Matthew 5:37. When it comes to my relationships with others, and especially my relationship with you, help me be someone that under promises, and over delivers in every area of my life. Help me to live within my own abilities and gifts that you have given me, rather than succumb to the pressure of who others think I should be. Amen.
Challenge: In what areas of your life are you over promising and under delivering? Think of 3 and write them down.
