Walking With Jesus Sample
Today we'll read about Peter's denial of Jesus in all 4 Gospel's. We'll see very clearly that Peter's denial of Jesus was based on weakness and fear. Earlier we read about Jesus praying with the disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane. Remember what happened? Jesus asked them to be watchful and pray. What did they do? They fell asleep.
As I researched this story, gotquestions.org described Peter's denial this way:
There is no doubt Peter's failure to appropriate the only means to shore up his own weakness—prayer—occurred to him as he was weeping bitterly after his denials. But Peter learned his lesson about being watchful, and he exhorts us in 1 Peter 5:8 “Be on the alert, because your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
Peter’s weakness had caused him to be “devoured” momentarily as he denied his Lord because he hadn’t been prepared through prayer and he underestimated his own weakness.
Pray: Lord, help me to understand. You have already paid the ultimate price and have called me into freedom in Christ. Give me the courage to stand up for you even if I experience doubt or fear. Your words are true and you wouldn’t lead me astray. May I walk in that confidence and proclaim your name. Amen.
Challenge: Memorize 1 Peter 5:8
