If you’ve ever been through the emotional ups and downs of searching for your perfect life mate, I’m sure you can appreciate the beauty and simplicity of the very first romantic connection. No need for eHarmony or match.com; no false starts, missteps or bruised egos.
This was nothing like my awkward dating experiences throughout my high school and college years, when I tried to talk the various girls who caught my interest into going out with me—with varying degrees of success. During my single years, a trail of polite dodges and at times, outright rejections, followed in my wake. Until in His perfect time, God brought the real girl of my dreams into my life. She was gorgeous and godly. All those years of striving culminated in the realization that God had been protecting me from a marriage misstep with the wrong woman.
Did you notice that after God created Adam, He made him wait before He brought his female counterpart onto the scene? Maybe this contributed to Adam’s enthusiastic response when he first saw Eve and declared, “She shall be called ‘Whoa-man!’” (my paraphrase).
In His own perfect timing, God rolled out His relational plan for the very first man and woman. He provided the helpmate Adam’s heart longed for in Eve.
Whether you’re married or single, a core truth you can take away is that loneliness was never God’s intent for humans. God is relational in His Triune nature, and you’re created in His image. God hard-wired humans for deep, intimate, personal relationship—with Him and with other people.
Headlines about loneliness sometimes hit the news. Psychologists express concern that we’re becoming increasingly emotionally isolated in our wired, virtual world of “Friends, Fans and Followers.”
We humans are designed for relational connection. We see this truth laid out in Scripture from Genesis to Revelation—from God’s perfect intent for us in the Garden of Eden; to the God-ordained collective nature of the Church as the Bride of Christ; to the glimpses we see of a heaven where together we’ll corporately gather in worship around the throne of God.
God designed us to be in relationship with Him and with each other.
If you’re married, this passage in Genesis 2 also lays out another key spiritual truth which is a bedrock principle for a healthy marriage—leaving and cleaving.
It’s easy to be lonely in our culture - even when we’re surrounded by people. But as believers, we need never feel truly lonely, because our relationship with God reaches into the deepest part of our souls.
Does your soul pant for God? Ask Him to stir in you a thirst to know and love Him better. Spend a few moments drinking in His presence and experiencing Him as the Living Water.
