When it became apparent that my sister needed to relocate from California to be closer to family in South Florida, I volunteered to help pack her up and drive the truck cross country … on the condition that my younger sister join us for the odyssey. And so, we found ourselves, three siblings in their 50s, side by side in the cab of a truck for 3,400 miles over four days. Crazy, you say? Yes, indeed – but we all need a little bit of “crazy” from time to time. We packed up and rolled out of Fresno, well aware that the last time we had ridden together for more than an hour had resulted in fights, insults, slaps, and dirty looks. But the passing of time and the separation we had known over the intervening decades made for laughter and stories we thought we had long since forgotten. We rode down the miles just happy to be together on the other side of life’s ups and downs. We ate on the fly and drove late into the evenings. We realized that though the years had kept us far apart, there was something deep inside us all, something beyond a shared childhood, something beyond a sense of familial responsibility. We discovered a love with dimensions we had not suspected … it was always there … we just needed to grow into it.
