The weakness of a man-made government is that it is man-made. Like a state-of-the-art jetliner brought down by human error, even the very best system of government is ultimately subject to the moral code of the people who make its laws and interpret its constitution.

The Virginia Declaration of Rights voiced the assumption that drives a democracy: “That all power is vested in, and consequently derived from, the people.”

What if the people are immoral, or profit-driven, or blood-thirsty? Power has no inherent goodness, so those of us who see our democracy in a state of moral meltdown are left to wonder what kind of nation shall be shaped by generations to come should God be driven from the public arena and good be gutted by relativism.

James Madison, second President of the United States, wrote, “We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion … Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to govern any other.”

If ever we needed good and godly leaders, it is now. We are fearful of international terrorists. We should be equally concerned about domestic termites.
