Abiding in the PsalmsSample
Where I Belong
Every so often in life when everything is just as it should be, when we are with the right people, in the right place, and doing the right things, we feel for a moment that we are right where we belong — at home. However, often it can be so hard to know where we fit or what our purpose is. In the first verse of this psalm, we are given answers to some of life’s biggest questions. We know where we belong; we know what we are made to do! It is so fitting to praise God. That is what we are created for and that is where we will feel content and at home, in praise of the one who designed us, created us, and loves us.
We spend our lives trying to get people to praise us, to think well of us, to reflect positively on us or speak well of us, and we do this because we want to put ourselves in the place of God, thinking it will fill our hearts and give us contentment. However, the opposite is true; when we take our eyes off ourselves and put them on God, we will have ample reason to praise Him, and we will feel pleasant and fitting as we do so. When we praise God, we are where we belong and where we will be for eternity.
