Abiding in the PsalmsSample
Refuge and fortress
Psalm 91 sets the tone for the entire psalm in the first two verses. God is a refuge and a fortress in whom we can trust. As we read through the psalm we are presented with the reality of life’s challenges and hardships. Yet we are given these examples through the lense of someone who takes refuge in God. While we may lose control and face challenges that overwhelm us, God is not overwhelmed. This psalm reveals the closeness of God to someone who seeks His shelter.
The psalmist gives us direct advice. It is important that we look at this with correct perspective. "If you say, 'The Lord is my refuge,' and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you…”
These verses are not saying that those who take refuge in the Lord never face anything difficult. It is, however, saying that those who trust in God will have Him on their side. Ultimately, the broken parts of life won’t have the final say when God is involved. God will overcome them and lead you in the right direction going forward. God is the one who knows how to approach every situation, so the best thing we can do is seek Him.

1. Wisdom psalms give us an example of how we should live in particular situations. What wisdom are we getting from this psalm?
2. How are we to relate to God when we face difficulties?
Pray
