But his master answered him, You wicked and lazy and idle servant! Matthew 25:26 AMPC
In order to understand how to build a business that extends the reach of God's Kingdom here on earth, it is useful to pay attention to the things the Lord taught about the Kingdom. Talking in particular about productivity, the Lord likened the Kingdom to a man who had given some money to three individuals to invest on His behalf, in hope of receiving a handsome profit on His return.
That account illustrates for us that slackers don't get a pat on the back from the Lord; they get a sharp, and proper rebuke. For him who made excuses for his lack of productivity, the master had these words, “'Wicked man! Lazy slave! Since you knew I would demand your profit, you should at least have put my money into the bank so I could have some interest. Take the money from this man and give it to the man with the $10,000. For the man who uses well what he is given shall be given more, and he shall have abundance. But from the man who is unfaithful, even what little responsibility he has shall be taken from him. And throw the useless servant out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'” (Mattew 25:26-30 TLB)
“The man who uses well what is he given shall be given more.”
Those words should ring continually in your heart all through this week as you ponder on the idea of performance. This idea is at the core of how the Kingdom of God approaches the subject. “It is required in stewards that one be found faithful.” (1 Corinthians 4:2 NKJV)
In its simplest form, a business is about harnessing resources and opportunities, and the better you do at it, the more resources and opportunities you subsequently get, and vice versa. Therefore, the best businesses are those whose leader is adept at managing the human and material resources at his disposal while deploying them to opportunities in the most timeous manner.
Importantly, even when a business has great resources (human and material), its ability to exploit opportunities in a timely manner depends ultimately on the quality of the culture (practice) that has been built within the organization.
As you think about performance this week, ask the Lord to show you what needs to change about your people and practice.
