Truly Life
1 Timothy 6:12, 19
“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called…that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”
If salvation is a gift of God, which we receive by faith, why is Paul calling Timothy to fight the good fight of the faith and take hold of the eternal life to which he was called?
The fight is against the magnetic pull of our flesh and the ways of this world which seduce us into living for the moment rather than for eternity. Eternal life is both a future and present reality. We take hold of eternal life now, when we experience salvation by faith in Jesus Christ, and then live by him. Jesus is the one we are taking hold of. He is our life both now and for eternity. Wealth on earth is a distraction when it becomes a substitute for the life we find in Jesus. It is Jesus who gives peace, inner freedom, hope, joy and love. Surrendering to the life of Jesus, which is truly life, is a foretaste of the fullness of the life to come.
Lord Jesus, you are my life. Thank you for your Spirit alive within me and your invitation to live for you and with you today.
