Heritage of Faith
1 Chronicles 5:1-2
“The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father’s marriage bed, his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph…and though Judah was the strongest of his brothers and a ruler came from him, the rights of the firstborn belonged to Joseph)-”
Matthew 1:1
“A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham…”
Does our genealogy or family history matter in the new covenant of grace in Christ?
We have been grafted into God’s covenant and tree of faith, through faith in the finished work of Christ. We are the “church of the firstborn” (Hebrews 12:26), whose names are written in heaven. However, God still honors covenants and faithfulness in his kingdom. The lineage and heritage of faith can protect us from sin’s strongholds and give us examples of faithfulness to follow. Families matter to God. Passing on the baton of faith to the next generation is the greatest gift we can give them. However, only God can save a soul, and each person must grab hold of that baton of faith for themselves and run with perseverance the race marked out for them.
Lord Jesus, thank you for the heritage of faith you have given to me, and for you salvation story. May my children and grandchildren know and serve you.
