Covenant Friendships
1 Samuel 18:1, 3-4
“…Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself…And Jonathon made a covenant with David, because he loved him as himself. Jonathon took off his robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.”
Jonathan’s and David’s covenant friendship was a source of great strength and encouragement to both of these men. It required humility to disarm themselves and become vulnerable to each other. They admired each other’s bravery in battle and trusted their lives to each other. Jonathan confronted the Philistines with his armor bearer against huge odds, and David did the same. Both were men of faith, courage and humility. The battle was not about them. Jonathan had said, “…Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few,” (1 Samuel 14:6) and David had said, “…it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s…” (1 Samuel 17:47). Their friendship fueled their faith, hope and love in God. All of us need friendships like this.
Lord Jesus, thank you for the covenant friendships you have given me. Thank you for renewing and encouraging me again and again through these relationships.
