Go: A 40-Day Journey To The Never ReachedSample
Washing our Father’s Dishes
By: Dick Brogden
Pentecostal missiology is linked to eschatology. Our only hope is Christ’s return, and we’ve feel the urgency of Matthew 24:14: “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.”
As a child, I loved Christmas—I still do. Our family tradition was to open presents early on Christmas morning.
If my Father had said: “Wash the dishes, clear the table and then we will open presents,” I would have sprinted to the kitchen. I don’t like doing dishes, but I love Christmas presents!
As followers of Jesus, we have been invited into his mission. This is true for all believers. The grandest present of all awaits us. All we have to do is preach the gospel of the Kingdom among every nation as a witness—and then the King will come.
Upon being informed of his personal cost, Peter inquired about John: “What price will John pay? Do I alone have to pay the price?” Jesus answered bluntly:
“If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me” (John 21:22 NKJV).
Quibbling about who does what, who pays what price, and what is fair is not how we should spend our energy. We have one focus—following Jesus, laying down our lives that the gospel might go to the uttermost parts of the earth.
Rather than comparing ourselves to others, we are to concentrate on our assignment. To us who ask Jesus about others or mutter about them under our breath, Jesus bluntly says: “What is that to you? You follow me.”
Our attention should never be on others, but on him, his mission, and our assignment to wash the Father’s dishes—to preach the gospel to every people group.
Go Anyway
If you are struggling with feelings of unfairness, lack of recognition and praise, or frustration, write down or articulate your honest concerns and questions. Imagine Jesus’ response: “What is that to you? You follow me.” Ask God to renew your focus on him and on what is truly important.
