Journey Of The Seed - Catch The Bible's Big Picture In 60 DaysSample
HOLY WEEK
[Scheduled Reading: John 8-14]
Much of the book of John covers roughly a single week of history.
Today we call it Holy Week. It’s the week before Easter.
Let’s look at what typically occurred during Holy week, beginning on the 10th day of the first month of the year.
- On the 10th day, five days before Passover, a lamb was selected for sacrifice.
- For the next four days, the lamb was observed. It was to be a perfect male lamb.
- Finally on Passover Day, the lamb was sacrificed.
On this particular Passover week, Jesus comes on the scene as the Passover Lamb and goes through a similar routine as the barnyard lamb.
- Five days before Passover, Jesus rides into Bethany on a donkey. [The Lamb is selected.]
- For the next four days, Jesus is questioned by the religious authorities. [The Lamb is inspected]
- On Passover, Jesus is sacrificed. [The Lamb is sacrificed.]
Something else happened on this Passover week. Three days later, Jesus was resurrected from the dead.
It’s the most stunning single event in history.
This makes for a historic Holy week.
As you read the book of John, be sure to take notice of various mentions of this Passover week:
- John 11:55 and 12:1 – “six days before the Passover”
- John 12:12-15 – “the next day” Jesus rides on the donkey
- John 13:1 – before the Passover Feast
- John 19:14 – it was the day of Preparation of the Passover
- John 19:31 – it was the day of Preparation
Understanding the context of this historic holy week shines a different light on these passages in John’s Gospel, doesn’t it!
