"THE PRODUCTION OF THE BIBLE - THE WRITING OF THE TESTAMENTS"
The beginnings of the writing of the Old Testament Scriptures happened at a unique time and place: a time and place that had produced one of the earliest writing methods that could express spiritual ideas clearly through use of letters that designated sounds; a time and place that produced flexible and easy to carry paper to put the writings on; a time and a place that made those materials convenient and easy to use.
God used this time and place to inspire the writing and collection of Scripture that he would use to give humanity his story. To give humanity its story. To give us the love story of the fall and redemption of man. He began working through dedicated followers, inspiring them to put his story, his words, and his promises into writing.
Looking at the New Testament, there is a similar advantage to the time and place of Christ and the spreading of Christianity and the church. With travel lanes radiating out from the Roman Empire, making travel and communication easier than it had ever been between regions and nations, the good news of Christ was able to spread out into the world in ways it could never have in the years before.
God chose his people, giving them the original covenant (the Old Testament). God then, using those people, fulfilled that covenant with Christ (the New Testament). And from there, his Word, his Gospel, the Good News of Christ for all humanity, spread out around the globe and across the ages.
Why does the historical and geographical placement of the Scripture matter when studying or thinking about the Bible? What importance do you personally place on when and where Scriptures were written?
How can and how does God use these ancient writings, written for a specific time and place, in your "modern" life?
