What is prayer?
Isn’t it interesting that the disciples had to ask Jesus to teach them how to pray? You would think that prayer would be a foundational first step as a disciple. How long had they been following Jesus before they brought this up to Him? Is it possible they were struggling with prayer on their own and that is where this question was coming from? The disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray and He answers with a story about someone who just keeps knocking on a door until it opens.
Here are three simple things we learn from Jesus’ response about prayer:
1. Create space to talk with God.
2. Talk to God as your Father.
3. Be persistent and don’t be afraid to ask
Prayer, simply put, is your communication with God. I think Jesus was more interested in His followers discovering what it was like for them to connect with God in their own unique and personal way. Jesus tells a story about knocking on the door so that we can get our focus off the door and onto Who is waiting for us on the other side.
