Life in the Kingdom

DAY 38 OF 45

I Choose Gentleness

Gentleness is a balance between extremes; weakness and harshness. It is strength submitted to God and sanctified by God; power under God’s control and purpose. It is having a steadiness and stability that is not given to extremes. It is having sensibility and sensitivity when dealing with people. For example, man is strong by nature but only when his strength is under control, he is called a gentlemen.

Max Lucado writes, “I choose gentleness. Nothing is won by force. I choose to be gentle. If I raise my voice, may it be only in praise. If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer. If I make a demand, may it be only of myself.”

Without gentleness we become harmful instead of helpful, hurting instead of healing, painful rather than pleasing, and selfish instead of selfless. Ultimately, gentleness is being generous with your love toward others.

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. (Proverbs 15:1)

A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. (Proverbs 15:4)

The Kingdom life produces gentleness. It is a life that offers grace because of the grace God has given. Gentle people have been touched and transformed by the grace of God, and they delight in showing that grace to others.

How will your treat your family, co-workers and neighbour? Will you be harsh, or will you choose gentleness? How will you treat a believer who sinned? Will you condemn, or will you deal with him gently? What about those who disagree with you? Will you push them away or will you choose gentleness?

Prayer: Lord, Your gentleness never fails me. You are slow to anger. Your kindness is without limits. Open my heart to this gentleness of Christ. In turn let me show the same gentleness to others. In Jesus’ precious name, I pray, Amen!
