Streaks: Bible ReadingSample
This last section of Matthew 5 is some of the most challenging teachings Jesus ever gave. But to highlight one of the most practical and helpful pieces, look closer at His teachings on adultery (verses 27-30). Jesus is using big, drastic language to paint a picture of how we can deal with sin in our lives. In no way does Jesus want people to physically mutilate themselves as a way of avoiding sin! What He is telling us is that we should eliminate the things in our lives that cause us to fall to sin…the regular sources of temptation. It may be a piece of technology, or a certain group of friends, or a place you regularly go that always seems to get you into trouble. When you notice those trends in your life, it’s time to remove yourself from that situation…get rid of the opportunity to sin, and you will find it much easier to avoid that particular sin altogether. In other words: it is ALWAYS easier to avoid temptation rather than resist it.
As you read today, ask yourself these two questions:
- What verse or phrase stood out to me the most?
- What can I do with that in my life today?

About this Plan
Jesus’ most famous sermon is found spread across three chapters of the book of Matthew, and it is absolutely packed with incredible wisdom and intense challenges. We will spend one week focusing on bite-sized chunks of this message, and building a Bible-reading streak. If we will chew on these words and set out to apply one concept each day, we will see our lives changed dramatically in seven short days.
