Revival: The Azusa Street Revival (1906-1909)
‘The Azusa Street Revival’ began in Los Angeles under the leadership of William J. Seymour, a humble African American preacher hungry for more of God. After months of prayer meetings, the Holy Spirit descended in a powerful way. Meetings at the Azusa Street Mission were characterised by speaking in tongues, miraculous healings, and interracial unity—an extraordinary phenomenon in a racially segregated society.
News of the revival spread quickly, drawing people from across the globe. Attendees carried the fire of Pentecost back to their own countries, igniting what would become the global Pentecostal movement. Today, more than 600 million Christians trace their spiritual heritage to Azusa Street. The revival was marked not by polished preaching but by deep humility and an unwavering hunger for the Spirit’s power.
Revival thrives where humility and unity flourish. How can you promote unity and seek God’s Spirit in your church?
