Matthew, follow me
Matthew sat at the tax booth, collected taxes on behalf of the Romans, sold himself to the empire at the expense of his people. He was not only despised for this, but he was hated, kept away.
Among the thousands of good people, Jesus chose the least popular one, the one no one would have dared to even approach, and yet Jesus does the unexpected.
The world's yardstick favors popular people because their message quickly reaches a vast audience of people. Just think of our modern influencers paid by politicians or brands to sell their ideas or their products.
Jesus should have chosen a prominent priest or even the high priest, and yet He chooses just anyone, someone who is disliked by everyone.
A hated man who feels called and feels the warmth in that loving voice that calls him and immediately gets up and follows Him; without even making himself heard, in silence, he leaves everything and follows Jesus.
Do you think you are hated? Does the judgment of your sin make you unworthy? Are you afraid that others will remind you of who you are and what you have done in life? Don't think about it, do as Matthew, get up, leave your wrong situation and start a new life in Jesus. God is the healer who rehabilitates perfectly.
