There's Hope For Today

DAY 299 OF 366

Getting even is a costly waste of time. The sweet taste of vengeance conceals a venom that numbs the soul. Revenge is a powerful and deceptive emotion. It fills up our prisons. It destroys our relationships. Revenge is obsessive, consuming, and insatiable. The pride that feeds it disables a man’s security system. Anger dulls his judgment. Clear thinking goes out the window when vengeance walks through your door.

Though “revenge is sweet,” it usually invites extended spiritual illness. I’ve watched it make fools out of smart people. I’ve seen grown men reduced to pouting adolescents.

When revenge is finished devouring its prey, it begins to devour you. You probably know somebody who is “eaten up” with vengeance. Taking vengeance takes out the best in us as it brings out the worst in us. You can be sure that God isn’t in it. Taking vengeance is a gross violation of God’s authority.

Paul admonishes the Romans to leave vengeance to God. It’s His business. He “will repay” in just the right measure. Nobody really gets away with anything. God keeps a perfect set of books. That truth does not comfort my heart. It causes me to fear for my oppressor.
