Week 18. Day 4. Isaiah 40-43.

40:1 is the great turning point in the book of Isaiah. After 39 chapters announcing judgment, Isaiah now looks ahead to a day when judgment will be done, and God will bring comfort and salvation.

40:3-5 Notice that this coming salvation and comfort will first be announced by a messenger in the wilderness (which we see in Mark 1:2-8) and then the Lord God himself will come to be with his people.

  • What picture of God is presented? Which images do you find the most powerful?
  • Why do you think such a vast view of God is painted?

41:8-10 What are the promises of hope for God’s people here?

42:1-9 This is the first ‘servant song’ in Isaiah. God promises a servant (that we know to be Jesus) who will be the one to carry out God’s glorious plans of salvation. We’ll ask the same questions of each servant song, to build a picture of Jesus.

  • What is the servant like?
  • What will the servant do?

Bonus: Remember, this is how God is going to deal with evil and achieve his plans. Is this sort of servant what we would expect?

NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.
