Sign #4: Relationships
"Do not be misled: bad company corrupts good character" - 1 Corinthians 15:33
One of the most powerful ways that distractions can pull us away from God is through our relationships. Whether it’s with family, friends, or colleagues, the people we surround ourselves with greatly impact our spiritual lives. Relationships can be a source of encouragement and support, but they can also lead us astray if they are not aligned with God’s Will.
In 1 Corinthians 15:33, Paul warns, “Bad company corrupts good character.” Our relationships have a direct influence on our thoughts, behaviors, and attitudes. If we are surrounding ourselves with people who don’t prioritize God, or who lead us into unhealthy patterns, it becomes harder to stay focused on our relationship with Him. In contrast, Proverbs 27:17 tells us that “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” God has created us for community, and He intends for our relationships to encourage and strengthen our faith, not weaken it.
Our relationships can either fuel our passion for God or cause us to lose sight of His Priorities. If we’re in relationships that don’t align with God’s Word, we may find ourselves compromising on our beliefs or values. However, when we connect with fellow believers who are pursuing Christ with the same zeal, it uplifts our spiritual journey and encourages us to get closer to God.
Jesus’ relationship with His disciples is the perfect example of Godly relationships. He called them not just to follow Him in action, but to walk alongside Him in a deep, personal relationship. Through their time together, Jesus taught His disciples how to live according to God’s Will, how to love others, and how to stay connected to God the Father. Jesus prioritized their relationship, and they in turn were shaped by His Love and Wisdom.
In John 15:15, Jesus says, “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” Jesus modeled the ultimate form of friendship—one that is not only based on love but also on sharing wisdom, supporting one another, and staying focused on the Father’s Will.
Take a moment to evaluate the people you spend the most time with. Are they encouraging your walk with God, or are they a distraction? Are they helping you grow in your faith, or pulling you away from God’s Will? Healthy relationships should lead us to love God more and live more like Him. If your relationships are hindering your relationship with God, it may be time to set boundaries or even reconsider some connections.
Prayer:
Lord, I thank You for the relationships in my life. Help me to evaluate them and ensure that they are drawing me closer to You. If there are relationships that are pulling me away from You, give me the strength and wisdom to set boundaries and seek healthier connections.
