Three Things to Learn From Two Men: David & Solomon Part II

A Heart after God

We have looked at the lives of two famous men in the Bible. Both have revealed some dark secrets but also some great lessons about how to walk closely with God. The Bible presents us with many examples of individuals who were able to walk closely with God despite their struggles and failures. King David is one such individual. Despite his struggles with lust, David is described in Acts 13:22 as a “man after God’s own heart.” This statement encourages us to strive to be like David, passionate about God’s heart and allowing it to come through us.

King Solomon, David’s son, ended his reign with division and family issues. This serves as a reminder that even those who are blessed by God and have great success can still fall short of being a “man or woman after God’s own heart.”

One way to seek after God’s heart is to follow the example of Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach, a renowned composer and musician would begin each of his orchestral pieces with the initials “JJ” (Jesus helped me) and end with “SDG” (Soli Deo Gloria, or “to God alone be the glory”).

By starting each day with the mindset of “Jesus helped me” and ending each day with "to God be the glory," we can, like Bach, trust that God will take care of everything in between. Through the pain, joy, blessings, and trials of life, God will be there to help us and guide us.

Our prayerful application should be to ask God to help us finish strong and to walk closely with Him. Only with Jesus’ help can we be people after God’s own heart. It’s that God is making us more like Jesus, which in turn causes our hearts to be like God’s. We see people the way He does, we desire to love them the way He has loved us, and above all, God reigns supreme in our lives.
