First Date Tips for Christians

DAY 4 OF 5

Keep Your Phone off the Table & Mind Your Body Language

Tip #4: Be kind to your date!

You want to make the best possible impression on a first date. So, it's important to be mindful of the signals you’re giving off because we all know that actions speak pretty loudly. One of the easiest ways to ensure you’re showing kindness on a date is to keep your phone in your purse or pocket. Checking your phone in the middle of a date instantly tells the other person you’re either not interested or wish you were somewhere else with someone else doing something else.

Of course, there are exceptions, like if you have kids at home or something happening with your family. If that’s the case, be upfront with your date about needing to check your phone occasionally so they know it’s not because you’re bored or uninterested.

Other Ways to Make a Great Impression on a First Date

Make eye contact! Eye contact is one of the easiest ways to show your date that you’re interested in them and what they’re saying.

Smile! A smile goes a long way–it can help put your date at ease and feel more comfortable around you too.

Sit up straight and be attentive. Simple movements like leaning toward the person when they’re talking or nodding your head show you’re engaged in the conversation. Slouching in your chair or crossing your arms gives a “closed-off” vibe that won’t make for a very enjoyable or relaxing first date.

What to Do if It’s Not a Great First Date

Your body language says a lot, and you can make subtle movements and gestures that show you’re interested and having a good time. But what if you’re not? What if your first date isn’t going great?

Be kind anyway.

You might be tempted not to make eye contact, smile, or engage in the conversation. But that’s not necessarily the best choice. You can still have a pleasant time with someone without it going past a first date. So, conduct yourself well, and then afterward, you can thank your date for spending time together but let them know you’re not interested in pursuing a future relationship.

Kindness counts when the date is great and even when it’s not. Scripture highlights the importance of treating everyone with gentleness and patience—even if it’s not the best dating experience.
