Day 5: Walking Wisely
My child, listen to me and do as I say, and you will have a long, good life. I will teach you wisdom's ways and lead you in straight paths. If you live a life guided by wisdom, you won't limp or stumble as you run. (Proverbs 4:10–12 NLT)
For the next several weeks, Timothy took on the major challenge of answering another of his “right” questions: “How can I lead my congregation to understand, embrace, and teach Christlike character values to others? Our emphasis has to be simple, clear, and affordable.”
His scripture study revealed ten core character values that are special in the eyes of God. Each core value seemed surrounded with a cluster of related values.
The most foundational value, he realized, is wisdom. He described and personalized wisdom in his journal as “Behaving in ways that show I understand the consequences of my choices.” He also noted several other values related to wisdom: perspective, discernment, and discretion.
Responding with Wisdom
Our unwise comparisons, unrealistic expectations, and fear of falling behind others can make us desperately vulnerable to poor choices. But remember: Most of today’s problems were yesterday’s solutions. Those seemingly quick solutions can have ugly consequences.
We honor God when we force ourselves to slow down, take a deep breath, and examine the possible consequences of choices tempting us. Godly friends are an excellent help in this step. God wants us to behave in ways that show we understand the consequences of our choices.
- Why do you think Timothy regarded wisdom as the most basic of all character values?
- How can you integrate wisdom even more into your leading or discipling?
- What choice could you be making this week that risks unintended consequences?
Read about Daniel’s wisdom in Daniel 1. Ponder Psalm 111:10.
Prayer: All-knowing God, please help me grow in Your perspective, discernment, and discretion this week. Thank You for giving me outstanding examples of wisdom in Your Word.
