Mark: Living the Way of Jesus in the Worldनमूना
First Thought
The temple authorities were riled by the authority Jesus had exerted so publicly. They also knew that Jesus was directing the parable of the tenants at them. The Old Testament often uses the metaphor of a vineyard to describe Israel and her people. Isaiah 5:1-8 is a good example. In Jesus’ parable, the tenant farmers were contracted to supply a share of the harvest to the absentee landowner. They reneged on the agreement, killing all those sent by the landowner to collect his share, including his son and heir. Consequently, the tenant farmers were destroyed, and the vineyard was given to others. The parable prophetically indicts the Jewish authorities, but the outcome was assured. Drawing on Psalm 118, Jesus declares He will become the cornerstone of a new building, a new community, in whom all things will hold together. The hostile challenge from the temple authorities is swiftly followed by the Pharisees’ and Herodians’ attempt to trip Jesus up and the Sadducees’ trick question around the resurrection. Tension and opposition are ratcheting up.
