First Thought

Meanwhile, in the courtyard of the High Priest, a different kind of trial was underway. The contrast between Jesus and Peter is stark. In his favor, Peter is the only disciple who has shown up. Nevertheless, he denies that he knows Jesus three times. First, privately around the fire to one of the passing servant girls; then more publicly to those standing around; and finally in front of a larger group of bystanders. The awful moment of truth dawns for Peter as the rooster crows for the second time. What Jesus had predicted had indeed just happened. Overcome with remorse, Peter breaks down and weeps. In the house, Jesus was confirming His identity as Son of God, fully aware of deadly consequences. Downstairs in the courtyard, Peter was denying he ever knew the ‘Nazarene’. In this test of loyalty, in the fire of adversity and opposition, Peter failed. Later, though, he will recall Jesus’ promise that He will gather His scattered disciples. Peter will be comforted and restored by the risen Jesus, who will commission him for the work that lay ahead. The gospel is for failed disciples such as Peter.
