The Golden Sandwich

How much would you pay for a grilled cheese sandwich?

My wife makes a mean grilled cheese. Surrounded by kettle cooked chips and a dill pickle, call me content. Not so much for patrons of the upscale Serendipity 3 in New York City, where you can find the “Quintessential Grilled Cheese” for $214. Tucked inside two pieces of French Pullman bread, made with Dom Perignon champagne and edible gold flakes, are slices of one of the rarest cheeses on the planet. This goes on my bucket list!

Solomon gives us the “Ultimate Quintessential Word Sandwich” in Proverbs 16. Brilliantly placed in between encouragement and a warning, we find something more precious than even the rarest of cheeses, the word wisdom.

In the first 15 verses, we are encouraged to allow God to have complete control of our actions and interactions with others. Verses 25-33 give us a stern warning of what happens when we try to take control and do what seems right to us.

Then, gently folded in the middle, Solomon gives us advice worth much more than golden bread and rare cheeses:

“How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.” (Verse 16)

What are you hungry for today? Why not make it a “Wisdom Sandwich?”

Reflective Questions:

1.  Is God in complete control of all my actions and interactions with others?

2.  Do I seek after godly wisdom as if it were a priceless commodity?

3.  Are my relationships suffering because I have neglected either of the above?

Memory Verse:

How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver. Proverbs 16:16

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for the treasure of wisdom. Help me to hunger for it every day.
