DAY 23 OF 116

2CHRONICLES 22-23:
Yesterday in 2nd Chronicles we heard of Jehoshaphat’s famous victory, accomplished only by prayer, worship, and the power of the Lord. Then his son Jehoram might possibly be Judah’s worst king, except for several at the very end of that kingdom.

ECCLESIASTES 2a:
In yesterday’s poetry reading, the theme of Ecclesiastes was given in these words:

Ecc. 1:2 NLT “Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!”
15 What is wrong cannot be made right.
What is missing cannot be recovered.
18 The greater my wisdom, the greater my grief.
To increase knowledge only increases sorrow.

MATTHEW 15b:
In Matthew yesterday we heard how the Jewish religious leaders confronted Jesus about traditions of hand washing before eating. Note that the issue there was traditions, not laws given by Moses. That led to Jesus’ revolutionary teaching about what defiles a person. It is what comes out of the heart that defiles people. That teaching does not agree with the Mosaic Law, and Jesus’ words foreshadow that He would establish a new covenant.

Let’s pray.
Lord Jesus, we come to You with open hearts and tell You that we want to be your followers. We don’t want to be those who honor You with our words, but having hearts that are far from You. We don’t need a man-made religion that gets us nowhere! We don’t want religion at all! We want You. So when we speak, let our words reflect the fact that we have been made ritually clean by You. May our hearts be freed from all evil, so that hateful speech, lies, slander, or evil plans never come up from our hearts to be spoken by us. May we show by our words, attitudes, and actions that we are authentically your followers— not making a show, but humbly admitting that we’re not perfect, and testifying that You are transforming us. Not to us, Lord, not to us, but to You alone be the glory.
