NUMBERS 31:
Yesterday in our reading in Numbers, the listing of sacrifices continued with those for the Festival of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, and the eight-day Festival of Shelters. Then in Numbers 30, we heard laws concerning the annulment of rash vows. These laws show how seriously God takes any vows made to Him!
PSALM 44:
Today’s psalm, Psalm 44, shows extreme contrast between part one and part two. Part one has a tone of praise— reciting the wonderful way God helped Israel. But part two accuses God of abandoning Israel. This psalm can be a pattern for us in how to plead with God to fulfill his promises or to again act as He has in the past.
ACTS 4b:
Yesterday in Acts, we heard the start of the dramatic trial of Peter and John, after they were arrested for what they were teaching after healing a lame man. They were teaching about the resurrection of Jesus, which offended the Sadducee part particularly since they taught that there was no such thing as a resurrection or afterlife for people who died. The council recognized that the two apostles had been with Jesus.
Let’s pray together.
O Lord our God, we love you. We pray along with the psalmist: Send your light and your truth. May they lead us today! Bring us into the temple where you live. You are the source of our happiness. We will make music and sing praises to you, O God, our God. Lord, we understand now that it's important to you that people who make vows in your name should fulfill them. And no wonder, because You made vows and You will fulfill all of them. Some of them concerned your Son dying on the cross for us. You fulfilled them, and you raised Jesus from death. And that proves that every one of your followers will be raised from death. Lord, give us the boldness of Peter and John, that we could stand up in this world which does not believe in You, and that we would proclaim boldly that You live, Lord, and that Jesus Christ is the savior of the world. And that there is no other name, that there is no other authority in the world, that can save us except the One that You have appointed. His sacrifice was so important that you allow no other to take its place. We don't follow a road to the truth and heaven. We follow THE road— the one that you have given. This is not a popular message today. Lord, therefore we ask that you would help us. Give us your power. Be with us by your Spirit today.
