Day 5
Psalm 19
Great Reward in His Word
Psalm 19 has always been a favorite of theologians, musicians, and authors. And rightly so. There are three powerful themes:
God’s Word in Creation
The foundation of Creation is beautifully laid out in verses 1 through 6. This brilliantly spoken Word of Creation testifies to and reveals God's glory without any spoken human word. Romans 1:20 says, “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.”
God’s Word in Our Lives
The second section (verses 7-11) reveals that as sure as creation was formed by the Word of God, so the same Word of God is perfect and sure in converting our soul, and enlightening our eyes, while also instructing us how to live through commands and warnings. “And in keeping them there is great reward” as God’s Words are more valuable than anything we could own, even the finest of gold. There is reward in heeding what God says, because as beautiful as Creation is, it is the Word of the Lord that remains forever, as in Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.”
Our Words Before God
The third portion (verses 12-14) is the human heart’s response to God’s spoken and written Word. We realize the sin and secrets of our heart which cause us to cry out with David the Psalmist, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer” (verse 14). His Word reminds us of the miserable nature of our own hearts and words and we plead with Him that we would be acceptable. We find redemption and strength for living through His powerful Word.
To Do With The Kids:
On a piece of paper, draw lines (or fold) to make three sections. Read Psalm 19 aloud as follows:
Section 1. Read verses 1-6 as they draw a picture of God’s Word in Creation.
Section 2. Read verses 7-11 as they draw a picture of what God’s Word does in our life.
Section 3. Read verses 12-14 as they draw a picture depicting our words before God.
Add color, cut into three strips, and glue onto cardstock (or laminate) for bookmarks.
